Castles
Wales' countryside is dotted with Castles from the many ages of Britain. Why not explore some of these spectacular monuments? Here are just a few of the best, there are many more around the county, including some mysterious forgotten castles.
 |
Carmarthen Castle
The castle at Carmarthen, on its rocky eminence overlooking the River Twyi, must have dominated the medieval town just as, a little way to the east, the Roman fort must have dominated the Roman town a thousand years before. |

Carreg Cennen Castle
One of the most spectacularly sited Welsh castles is Carreg Cennen, located north of Swansea. Spell-binding views are waiting to be experienced from the sharp hilltop upon which the castle sits. Indeed, Carreg Cennen dominates its surroundings, and seems out of place in the mountainous farming terrain which it commands.

Dinefwr Castle
Even at first glimpse, it is clear that the long ridge occupied by Dinefwr and the rocky knoll on which Dryslwyn sits perched are positions of the most extraordinary defensive strength. But suggestions that prehistoric fortifications possibly underlie the medieval castles are not borne out by any evidence. |

Dryslwyn Castle
Even at first glimpse, it is clear that the long ridge occupied by Dinefwr and the rocky knoll on which Dryslwyn sits perched are positions of the most extraordinary defensive strength. |

 |
Kidwelly Castle
Kidwelly is a mighty and imposing monument of Norman power. It is also a beautiful example of castle development, as the castle was dramatically altered on a number of occasions to conform to the latest thinking in military science. |

Laugharne Castle
Laugharne is perhaps best known for its associations with Dylan Thomas, but for the past 20 years, the picturesque castle, sited on the Taf estuary, has been the subject of painstaking archaeological investigation and gradual restoration. |

Llandovery Castle
Laugharne is perhaps best known for its associations with Dylan Thomas, but for the past 20 years, the picturesque castle, sited on the Taf estuary, has been the subject of painstaking archaeological investigation and gradual restoration. |

 |
Llansteffan Castle
The village of Llansteffan ("the church of Stephen") is a small but lovely spot, nestled between the sandy shores of the Tywi estuary and the lush green rolling hills of the Welsh countryside. |

Narberth Castle
Castles have been my passion since the sight of my first one in North Wales. It was my first time in the United Kingdom and not long after I stepped from my early morning flight, I came face to face with the enormous and proud Flint Castle. |

Newcastle Emlyn Castle
Laugharne is perhaps best known for its associations with Dylan Thomas, but for the past 20 years, the picturesque castle, sited on the Taf estuary, has been the subject of painstaking archaeological investigation and gradual restoration. |
